Start by Measuring Your Annex or Awning

Measure the usable floor area before choosing camping matting. Check the length and depth of your awning or annex, then allow for doorways, steps, furniture, guy ropes and the boundaries of your campsite. A mat that fits the nominal awning size can still be awkward if it blocks access or extends beyond the space you can actually use.

Choose the Right Mat Size

The current annex-matting range includes sizes from 3 x 2.5m through to 7 x 2.5m, plus a two-piece option that combines two 3 x 2.5m mats. Choose enough coverage for the area where you walk, sit or set up camp furniture without assuming the largest mat will suit every site. Compare the exact dimensions and packed size on the individual listing.

450GSM vs 600GSM Foamed PVC Matting

The annex range includes 450GSM and 600GSM foamed PVC options. GSM describes material weight per square metre, so the 600GSM versions use more material by weight per square metre than the 450GSM versions. That does not make one option automatically right for every trip: overall mat size, packed bulk, handling and the surface you camp on also matter.

Breathable and Porous Annex Matting

Many of the annex mats use a porous, breathable mesh-style construction that allows air and water to pass through. This makes them different from a solid tarp or sealed floor covering. Features such as UV treatment, mould and mildew resistance, non-slip surfaces and carry bags are available on many models, but specifications and inclusions vary, so check the individual product before choosing.

Check Caravan Park and Campsite Rules

Ground-cover rules can vary between caravan parks and campgrounds. Some sites have requirements about breathable flooring, mat size, how long ground coverings can stay down, anchoring methods or where a mat can extend. Check the current rules for the property you are visiting rather than assuming a particular mat is accepted everywhere.

Prepare the Ground Before Laying Matting

Clear the area of sharp sticks, stones, debris and other objects that could damage the mat or create an uncomfortable or uneven surface. Check for holes, roots, slopes and drainage paths before laying the mat. Camping matting can make a site more comfortable underfoot, but it does not remove hazards in the ground beneath it.

Using Matting on Grass, Gravel and Rough Ground

Several annex mats in the current range are designed for outdoor surfaces including grass, stone and rough ground. Suitability still depends on the exact mat and the condition of the site. On coarse gravel or uneven ground, inspect the surface carefully and remove sharp or raised objects before setup.

Positioning Around Doors, Furniture and Guy Ropes

Plan the mat around the way you will move through camp. Keep caravan and tent entrances, steps and main walking paths clear, and avoid creating folded or raised edges around furniture legs or guy ropes. Leaving a practical margin around cooking areas and other equipment can also make the campsite easier to use.

Wind, Edges and Trip Hazards

Lay the mat as flat as possible and check it during your stay if wind, rain or foot traffic causes it to move. Only use pegs, anchors or other securing methods where they are recommended for the product and permitted by the campsite. Keep edges and joins visible and away from busy walking paths where practical.

Keep Matting Away from Heat and Flames

Keep camping matting clear of open flames, fire pits, hot cookware, BBQs and camp stoves unless the manufacturer specifically states that the product and required clearance are suitable for that use. Foamed PVC and other mat materials can be damaged by heat. Follow both the mat and appliance instructions and any campsite fire restrictions.

Cleaning, Drying and Storage

Shake or sweep off loose dirt after use and clean the mat according to its care instructions. Let it dry fully before folding and storing it so moisture is not trapped during transport or between trips. Several current annex mats include carry bags, although inclusions vary by model.

Annex Matting and Exercise Mats Have Different Jobs

The collection is primarily focused on caravan and campsite floor matting, but it can also include smaller NBR exercise mats. An exercise mat is designed as a cushioned personal surface for yoga, Pilates, stretching or floor workouts; it is not a substitute for a full-size annex floor. Check the product dimensions, material and intended use so you choose the right type of mat.

Common Camping Matting Mistakes to Avoid

• Buying by nominal awning size without measuring the usable floor area.
• Choosing a mat that extends beyond the campsite or blocks doors, steps or access paths.
• Assuming every caravan park has the same rules for ground coverings.
• Laying matting over sharp stones, sticks, holes or other ground hazards.
• Assuming all camping mats have the same GSM, weather resistance or included accessories.
• Leaving loose, folded or raised edges where people regularly walk.
• Using pegs or anchors without checking the mat instructions and campsite rules.
• Placing hot cooking equipment or open flames directly on matting without confirmed suitability.
• Packing the mat away damp or dirty without following its care instructions.
• Confusing a small exercise mat with full-size caravan annex flooring.
