How to Choose the Right Caravan Privacy Screen for Your Awning

Start with Your Awning, Not the Caravan Length

Choose a privacy screen around the awning it will attach to. Measure the usable awning or track length, the required screen drop and the available attachment points, then compare those measurements with the individual product specifications. Caravan body length alone does not tell you which screen will fit.

The current front-screen range runs from 3.4m to 5.2m in length and is listed at 1.95m high. Fitment still depends on the exact awning, track and setup, so check compatibility before purchase rather than assuming a screen of similar length will suit every caravan.

Front Privacy Screens vs End Screens

A front privacy screen runs along the outer edge of the awning and is useful for adding shade and reducing direct sightlines across the main open side. An end screen closes in one side of the awning area instead. The current collection includes front screens in multiple lengths, 2.2m angled end screens for suitable full-height setups and a 2.1m x 1.8m square-cut end screen for compatible pop-top caravan awnings.

Think about where the sun, neighbouring sites and foot traffic are likely to be. Some setups may only need one front screen, while others benefit from an end screen as well. These products create a more sheltered outdoor area but are not the same as a fully enclosed annexe.

Full-Height Caravan vs Pop-Top Screens

Pop-top caravan awnings can have different heights and geometry from full-height caravan setups. This collection includes a dedicated square-cut pop-top end screen, while the standard end screens use a taller angled shape. Do not assume a full-height end screen will fit a pop-top simply because the width looks similar.

What the 95% Shade Rating Means

The current Weisshorn privacy screens in this collection are listed by the supplier with a 95% shade rating and use 180gsm polyethylene fabric. Treat that figure as the supplier's shade specification for the material. It is not the same thing as a 95% UV-protection rating and it does not guarantee a particular temperature reduction under the awning.

Actual comfort will also depend on sun angle, orientation, wind, surrounding surfaces and how much of the awning area is screened.

Water-Repellent Is Not Waterproof

The screens in the current range are described as water-repellent rather than fully waterproof. That distinction matters: a privacy screen can help with light moisture and splash but should not be treated as a sealed weatherproof wall or substitute for a purpose-built annexe in heavy rain.

Check Awning Track and Attachment Compatibility

Before ordering, check how the screen is intended to connect to the awning, the usable track length and any model-specific fitment notes in the product listing. Several screens are designed for compatible roll-out awnings, but compatibility is product-specific and should not be assumed across every awning brand or style.

Secure the Screen Without Over-Tensioning

The current front screens use stainless steel D-rings with guy ropes and ground pegs, while the end-screen designs also include tightening straps. Use each attachment point only as intended, choose suitable ground for pegs and keep guy lines positioned where they are visible and less likely to become a trip hazard.

Tension the fabric enough to keep the screen stable without pulling excessively on the screen, awning or attachment track. Follow the individual setup instructions rather than using extra force to compensate for poor alignment or an incorrect fit.

Wind and Changing Weather

A large privacy screen can add wind load to an awning and its attachment points. Treat the screen as a shade and privacy accessory, not as a permanent structural windbreak. Monitor changing conditions, follow the awning and screen manufacturer guidance, and take the screen down or retract the setup when conditions are unsuitable.

Privacy Screen vs Full Annexe

Privacy screens are useful when you want a quicker, more open setup than a full annexe. They can add shade and visual privacy while retaining an outdoor feel, but they do not create a sealed room and should not be expected to provide the same weather protection as a complete annexe system.

Keep Screens Clear of Heat and Flames

Keep polyethylene screen fabric clear of BBQs, heaters, open flames, hot exhausts and other heat sources. Maintain the clearances required by the appliance manufacturer and do not position a privacy screen where it interferes with safe ventilation or exhaust flow.

Cleaning, Drying and Storage

Remove dirt and campsite debris according to the product care instructions, then let the screen dry completely before folding it into the supplied carry bag. Packing damp fabric can encourage mould, odour and material deterioration. Periodically inspect the edging, D-rings, straps, ropes, pegs and awning-track edge for wear before the next trip.

Common Caravan Privacy Screen Mistakes to Avoid

Buying by caravan body length instead of measuring the usable awning or track.
Confusing a front privacy screen with an end screen.
Assuming a full-height caravan end screen will automatically fit a pop-top.
Treating a supplier-listed shade rating as the same thing as a UV-protection percentage.
Assuming water-repellent fabric is fully waterproof or equivalent to a sealed annexe wall.
Leaving a large screen attached when wind or weather conditions become unsuitable.
Over-tensioning the screen or using improvised attachment points.
Packing the screen away while it is still damp.

Guide reviewed: August 2026.

Are caravan privacy screens worth it?

They can be a practical upgrade when you regularly use the space under a caravan awning. A privacy screen can add shade and reduce direct sightlines into the campsite without the setup of a full annexe. Check whether you need a front or end screen, then confirm the dimensions and awning compatibility before ordering.

Do caravan privacy screens help with shade?

Weisshorn caravan privacy screens use 180gsm polyethylene and offer a 95% shade rating on applicable models. The shade rating describes how much shade the material is designed to provide; it is not the same as a UV-protection percentage or a guaranteed temperature reduction.

Can I use a caravan privacy screen at caravan parks?

Caravan privacy screens are commonly used at caravan parks and campsites, but rules can vary between parks and sites. Check any restrictions on awning attachments, guy ropes, pegs, site boundaries and extended outdoor setups, then position ropes and pegs so they do not create a trip hazard.

How do I choose the right size caravan privacy screen?

Measure the usable length of your awning or awning track and the required screen drop before choosing a privacy screen. Weisshorn front screens are available from 3.4m to 5.2m wide and are 1.95m high. Match those dimensions to your awning rather than choosing from the caravan body length.

What is the difference between a front privacy screen and an end screen?

A front privacy screen runs along the outer edge of the awning, while an end screen closes one side of the awning area. Weisshorn offers angled 2.2m end screens for full-height caravan setups and a square 2.1m x 1.8m end screen for compatible pop-top awnings.

Will these privacy screens fit any caravan awning?

No. Check the screen dimensions, usable awning-track length, attachment method and overall setup before ordering. A screen designed for one awning size or style should not be assumed to fit another.

Are caravan privacy screens waterproof?

Weisshorn privacy screens are water-repellent rather than fully waterproof annexe walls. They can help with light moisture and splash, but should not be treated as a sealed weatherproof enclosure. Let the screen dry fully before storage.

Can I use a caravan privacy screen on a pop-top caravan?

Yes, provided the screen is designed for your pop-top awning. Weisshorn offers a 2.1m x 1.8m square-cut end screen for compatible pop-top setups. Full-height end screens use different dimensions and should not be assumed to fit.

Can I leave a caravan privacy screen up in strong wind?

A large screen can add wind load to the awning and its attachment points, so it should not be treated as a permanent structural windbreak. Monitor changing conditions, secure the screen only as instructed and follow the awning and screen manufacturer guidance. Take the screen down or retract the setup when conditions are unsuitable.

How are caravan privacy screens secured?

Weisshorn front privacy screens use stainless steel D-rings, guy ropes and ground pegs, while end screens also use tightening straps. Secure the screen as instructed, keep guy lines clear of walkways and avoid over-tensioning the screen or awning.
