There's a reason the Jitterbug design has been around for decades — it just works. The curved metal lip on the front of the lure creates a side-to-side rocking motion on the retrieve, along with a distinctive gurgling and plopping sound on the surface. That combination of movement and noise draws fish up from below and out from structure in a way that subtle, silent lures simply can't replicate.
At 40mm and 3 grams, this is the smaller end of the Jitterbug range, making it ideal for light spin or baitcast setups targeting smaller Australian natives like bass, saratoga and jungle perch, as well as redfin and trout in lakes and streams. The compact profile suits finesse surface presentations where a larger lure would spook fish in tight, shallow water.
The stop-and-go retrieve is worth mastering — let the lure sit dead still on the surface after a few cranks, and fish that have followed it in often can't resist the sudden stillness. This technique is particularly effective at night when fish are hunting by sound as much as sight, and the Jitterbug's surface commotion does the work of calling them in.
