Is a tarp or tent footprint better under a tent?

A fitted footprint is tidy, light and shaped for a particular tent. A tarp is usually cheaper and more versatile because it can also become shade or a gear cover. Both can protect the tent floor effectively if the groundsheet stays completely inside the tent perimeter so rain cannot collect underneath.

Can I use a normal tarp as a tent footprint?

Yes, provided it is suitable for the job and folded so no edge extends beyond the tent floor. An exposed tarp edge can catch rain and funnel it under the shelter. Clear sharp debris first and choose a tarp size that can be neatly contained beneath the tent rather than creating a large water-catching border.

Should a groundsheet stick out from under a tent?

No. Any exposed section can collect rainwater and direct it beneath the tent floor. The footprint or tarp should sit slightly inside the floor perimeter, with excess material folded inward. Ground protection helps with abrasion and mud, but correct sizing and a well-drained campsite are what keep it from becoming a rain trap.

Do I need a footprint if my tent has a waterproof floor?

It is optional rather than essential for every tent. A footprint can reduce abrasion, mud and wear on the floor, which is useful on gravel, hard ground or frequent trips. If weight and packed space matter more, a durable waterproof floor may be sufficient on a carefully cleared campsite. Follow the tent manufacturer’s recommendations.
